Why I CAN'T go to VidCon

I can't go to VidCon for a couple of reasons. FIRST, I'm already going to Infinitus, which starts less than a week after VidCon ends. While that's totally feasible, it's still a lot of travel to be doing in such a short time. SECOND, the cost of registration is $80. Not terrible, but then you have to factor in the hotel, which I believe is $150 per night, and gas to get to L.A.. Really, the big complication is Infinitus. It's way more important than VidCon is, no matter how awesome it is or how many YouTubers are going. As much as I'd like to go to both, there's just no way it could work out, as I'm not that rich. I needed to type that out so I can remind myself of how impossible it would be and therefore can stop wanting to go. Whew, yay Infinitus!

P.S. First blog in forever! Not that I have thousands of followers who care :P

I woke up at noon today, despite my plans to have mom pick up some things before she went home. She and Hannah apparently showed up at NINE. A.M. Who does she think I am, a high school student? So I'm stuck with an extra blanket for a little while. Oh well.

And then I procrastinated for about 4 hours (thank God I didn't have work today) until an Am. History study session at 5:00. I went, and payed attention, and took notes.. and I still have no idea what's going on in that class.

Once that was done, I was in a study mood, so I read the SparkNotes for the book I had to have ready by tomorrow. (Come on, I can't read a whole book in one weekend, unless it's Harry Potter.) So as far as my professor knows, I read the book.

This was done all while watching Edward Scissorhands which, I was pleasantly surprised to see, was a trending topic on Twitter today. I love the internet sometimes. Which reminds me, I further love the internet because of THIS: http://bit.ly/DWYbb I want them :)

And I got a tumblr. lilagirl.tumblr.com *shrug* I don't know if I'll abandon Blogger, but tumblr is so pretty! We shall see. You may have to prove yourself, Blogspot.

How to Meet Nerd Girls

How to Meet and Woo a Nerdy Girl

Recently, I’ve noticed a lot of folks coming to The Park Bench after Googling “how do I meet a nerdy girl?” Hopefully, this is not the manifestation of some creepy new human trafficking trend but instead is the result of more people wanting to find and date the nerdy woman of their dreams. With that in mind, I offer the following tips:

Tip #1: Know where to look.

The number one thing to know about nerdy girls -- they're probably not going to be doing body shots at the local sports bar on a Friday night. If they're out partying, it's over a micro-brewed pale ale in the quiet corner of their local hole-in-the-wall watering hole. Other good places to spot nerdy women: libraries, bookstores, used bookstores, any other place with books you can think of, comic book stores, knitting stores, craft stores, sitting in the park...reading a book, the local cat fanciers convention, at a midnight showing of "Alien" or in their living rooms, watching "Firefly" again.

Tip #2: It helps to look like this guy:

You're pretty much good either way.

Tip #3: Read lots of books.

Here’s the brutal truth: the nerd girl of your dreams is a brainiac. She’s going to know a lot of stuff about a lot of stuff. You’re going to need to study up -- none of that sitting at the coffee shop with an unread copy of “The Waste Land” in your hand, trying to impress the shallow ladies. Your nerd girl will check to make sure that the spine on the book is cracked and cracked good. She likely also will ask you to compare “The Waste Land” to “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock.” If you have to resort to Cliff's Notes, do it surreptitiously. It’s like getting a butt implant – the nerd girls will know you’re faking it.

Tip #4: Don’t slack off on your video game skills.

One of the prime perks of dating a nerdy woman is that she will not yell at you for playing video games rather than, say, going shoe shopping with her. In fact, she likely will sit down next to you and pick up a controller. Here’s the thing though: she’s probably good at whatever game you’re playing so you better be good at it too. Whether it’s Mario Kart or Tiger Woods Golf or the bloody carnage of Grand Theft Auto, she will show no mercy. Practice, practice, practice!

Tip #5: Listen to NPR.

Nerd girls like to stay up to date on their current events…and they like to do it with the dulcet, sometimes somnolent tones of NPR broadcasters. Beware, though, of the onset of NPR depression which stems from listening to so much news and sad stories about flooding in Nova Scotia or the inequities facing migrant workers that you become convinced the world is doomed and there’s no use leaving your house in the morning. This will put a damper on your dating. However, this prevalent disease also will give you an out if you've had to slack off on your NPR duties – just say, “I had to take an NPR break. Sometimes it makes me sad.” This serves two purposes: it gets you off the hook AND it makes you look sensitive. Bonus!

Tip #6: Be interesting.

Whereas a lot of ladies want you to be rich, nerdy women just want you to be interesting. Do you have a comic book collection that spans decades and rests in a vault somewhere untouched by human hands? That’s kinda cool. Are you learning how to do animation so you can one day post the adventures of a hobo cat online? That’s kinda cool too. Maybe you build houses for the poor on weekends or spend an afternoon teaching creative writing to high school kids? Awesome and more awesome. It doesn't matter what you do, just do it well.

Tip #7: Know your pop culture references.

Know the complete works of the Nerd Holy Trinity: Joss Whedon, J.J. Abrams and Peter Jackson. Know that Nathan Fillion will always be on your girl’s “freebie” list. When she goes to church and thanks God that Robert Downey Jr. survived the 1980s so he could play Iron Man, say “Amen” right alongside her. And for the love of all that is sacred and holy, do not EVER get “Star Wars” and “Star Trek” confused: one has Wookiees, one has Shatner, it’s not that hard.

Tip #8: Compliment her by saying, “You remind me so much of Liz Lemon.”

This is truly the highest form of flattery for just about any nerdy woman. Liz Lemon is our patron saint. Her inability to wear high heels, keep food off her face or refrain from making penis jokes while holding a tower made of Legos in her hands makes us reflect fondly on our own quirks. We love her…and you should too.

Tip #9: Embrace her collectibles.

That is not a euphemism for something pervy. It’s just a fact. When you walk into her apartment for the first time and notice a glass cabinet filled with a miniature TARDIS, a sombrero-wearing Giles, a 17-inch Han Solo and a two-foot long replica of the Enterprise NCC-1701-D, do not say, “What the hell is all this stuff?” Instead say, “What the hell? Why don’t you have MORE of this stuff? And may I mail order something for you?”

Tip #10: Be willing to go to conventions.

It’s just a thing we do. Relax and embrace it…and know that nine times out of ten, you’ll catch a glimpse of some nubile young woman dressed as a Princess Leia slave girl. It’s what the universe does to reward patience of our significant others.

Tip #11: Know what to do in a zombie attack.

We've been practicing for this one for a long time. We don't want to have to leave you behind.

New Brick-o-Technology

The situation is becoming dire.  It's nearly August and I've yet to receive any sign that I'll be getting a new computer before I go to college.  They keep saying that I'll get it for my birthday at the end of August, 4 days before I actually go to CLU, but there's a money issue at dad's work.  Some asshat douchenozzle isn't paying the rent on a building that dad's company owns.  This  6 year old thing just isn't going to work at school.  *sigh*

Day 1

Day 1:
The first person of significance I saw was Lena of The Butterbeer Experience.  She was in line behind us to check into the hotel.  When we got there, I was still under the impression that Wrock Around The Rock was that night.  Luckily I found out otherwise before I made too much of an idiot of myself.  Then what was left to look forward to was the line party and the midnight (*cough* 11:30) showing of HP6!!  But disaster struck.  When trying to retrieve the movie tickets, we were informed that we hadn't bought any.  What??  Crap crap crap what now??  We put our names on the waiting list for tickets people bought but didn't want.  A mild to severe freakout later, Mom came into the room to tell Lizz and I that she'd gotten tickets!  Whew.  The line party itself left much to be desired.  There was some trivia and a crossword, but other than that we just sort of sat.  Once in the theatre, however, everyone in costume was invited to come to the front so people could take pictures.  Some were epic, some less so (like mine: a Hufflepuff).  What was surprising was the tumber of Tonks's!  Lizz among them, there were some pretty awesome photos taken of them with the lone Lupin.  The movie itself was great.  I've still only seen it the onc, but I think it's safe to say that Harry on Felix Filices is the best part.  The end was far too abrupt, and there was little to no explanation of the Horcruxes.  Overall though, this was the best one yet :)

Most of the movie and all of the LeakyMug were technically in Day 2, but sshhhhh.  I didn't film the LeakyMug just because I knew it would be on iTunes, and there really wasn't much of a visual.  It was 3 a.m., so I honestly don't remember much about it.  They threw candy at people and I bought a poster and a shirt that was way too small.  The poster I got signed by everyone except Sue, who couldn't make it to Azkatraz.  Melissa Anelli signed my book :)  The LeakyMug was really the first experience with a collection of people off the internet whom I greatly admire.  It was surreal, but I was too tired to fangirl, something they should be grateful about :P  Lizz and I got back to the room at 4:00 and finally fell asleep at 4:30.

It might be time for an internet purge. There are just too many people I'm subbed to on YouTube/following on Twitter/following on Blogger. In my Blogger feed only two people ever post anything (Hayley [hayleyghoover] and Kristina [italktosnakes])! On YouTube I'm subscribed to over 100 people, and only a handful make videos at all and even fewer I actually watch. As for Twitter, I just don't care what's going on with some of the people I follow. This purge has been a long time coming, and I've finally been inspired to do it by Alex Day and my lack of things to occupy me this summer.

Also, Hayley referenced a comment I made here which made my day a bit less craptastic. Thanks Hayley!

The reason the Potowatomi and Kikapoo Indians came is becuse they were forced there by other settlers. Indiana became a state when the Indiana government sent a constitution to the U.S. government for approval. James Maddison signed the constitution for Indiana to become a state. In 1679 La Salle became the the first European in Indiana. In 1732 the French made a permanent settlement at Vincenues. In 1763 France gave Indiana to Great Britan after the French and Indian War. In 1784 the first Amarican settlement at Clarksville is built. In 1787 Indiana became part of the Northwest Teritory.

Was this the whole State Project paper?  If so, what the hell was so scary about it!??  Ugh, I know I'll be looking aback and thinking the same thing about the Senior Project.

I like this book.

Here's a passage from it that I think really sums up the way the story is told.  The narrator is Death, but he's really just a regular guy doing his job, so no worries.  He's an observer who got interested in the protagonist, Liesel Meminger's life.  In this part of the book, Liesel is at a book burning for Hitler's birthday, as all of the Hitler Youth had to attend.  The fire was just lit.

Many jocular comments followed, as did another onslaught of "heil Hitlering."  You know, it actually makes me wonder if anyone ever lost an eye or injured a hand or wrist with all of that.  You'd only need to be facing the wrong way at the wrong time or stand marginally too close to another person.  Perhaps people did get injured.  Personally, I can only tell you that no one died from it, or at least, not physically.  There was, of course, the matter of forty million people I picked up by the time the whole thing was finished, but that's getting all metaphoric.  Allow me to return us to the fire.

That title is so spiffing, I wish I was enough of a quote person to have a weekly quote or sommat.  Alas, this is not the case.  sigh.

Prom is in two days.  I'm going with my lovelyspecialboyfriend in a lovelyspeciallimo full of lovelyspecialnerdfolk.  The dance itself, I'm afraid, is not going to be that entertaining.  What does one do for fun at the Nixon Library?  Hopefully these lovelyspecialpeople will make up for it.  Lauren is wearing a fancy top hat with her dress, and I am jealous of her.  As for me, I'm going to have my verra first professional up-do.  Let's hope that works out, since I generally don't like it when my hair is up/back.  There's talk of going to see Up after the dance.  I wasn't planning on seeing it, but if it'll make prom last longer, so be it.  Besides, in all of our five months together, Austin and I have never once seen a movie together.  Or really gone out.  Prom will sort of be our second date.  Strange we are.

I might as well acknowledge it.  I failed at BEDA.  It was too much like homework, so I forgot to do it.  I don't have to do fun things if I don't want to!(/forget)

Just some thoughts.

Things and stuff that really doesn't fit in Twitter of my Facebook status because people don't care all that much (basically what this blog was intended for).

My enter key has decided to become a 7th grader, and will now only respond if I strike it forcefully and with confidence. Same with the Apple keys.

I decided to try a Monster yesterday. I forgot how concentrated amounts of caffeine (or whatever else might be in those things) makes me sick. However, I feel like I should start getting my body used to it, because it's all I'll have in collegeland due to my distaste for coffee.

Speaking of the magical land that is college, realized that the only thing I'm afraid of is all the writing. If it weren't for that, I'd be so excited. It's required that everyone take a writing intensive course and a speaking intensive course to graduate. Those classes are going to break me -_-

I just found something sticky and purple on my sock. Eew. *removes sock*

As soon as we get our tickets, Boyfriend and I will be going to prom. It's at the Nixon Library, so I don't know what we're going to do while we're there. But before we even get to think about that, we have to find a ride! The only limo I've heard of is nearly full and contains the Ex (as well as all my friends). Boyfriend has hinted a couple times that he doesn't reeeaally want to go to prom. He mentioned that he'd rather do something free with the other friends who aren't going. The tickets are also a bit of a financial stretch for both of us. Buuuut I want to wear my dress and I want to do the pictures and all that nonsense. It is Senior Prom.  Maybe I should be a good Girlfriend and not make him go.... nah, we're going :)  Mayhaps there's a decent after party somewhere.  Who knows, I'm not in the department that gets those memos.
Whether or not he really, really doesn't want to go, he's pretending to be excited for me. :)

I ate too many Honey Mustard and Onion pretzels after school today.  Oops.

BEDA #7

I am an Artificial Noise Maker.
Did pretty well in archery yesterday! :) Only two 0's and a high score of 26. While texting Austin last night, I finally got him to agree to come to archery with me on the 16th, for bluegrass night. It'll be the first time we see each other outside of school stuff, unless something happens between now and then of course. He insists he sucks at archery, which is ironic, but I think he'll really like the bluegrass. Especially considering he plays half the instruments and wants to learn the banjo! He's kind of amazing like that.

Easter's on Sunday which means two things.. #1: shopping for new clothes, and #2: horrible, ugly, awkward family occasion. I realized that I haven't seriously shopped for new clothes in a very long time. I was never any good at it either. However, since then I've watched a whole lot of What Not To Wear, so I think I'll be prepared. (Not that I'll be shopping at high-end New York shops... more like at The Rack..) As for #2... I've always hated family occasions. No one in my extended family like me very much because I was a very awkward and anti-social child (ha, not much has changed), and they don't know what to do with me now-a-days. Hannah and I feel the same way, so at least we get to go off on our own and do whatever. (When we're not arguing, that is.) Hannah went to do the shopping thing today and got a really cute jacket. For the first time ever Hannah bought clothes I want to steal. In six months she'll have never worn it, and then it's mine! *yoink* She also got an iPod Touch the other day >~<

Unfortunately Hannah being out all day, I was left home alone all day to do nothing in particular. I would have gone somewhere to do something with someone, but no one's around! Argh!

I can't fathom why THEUSEDCHANNEL isn't a partner on YouTube yet, what with them being famous and all. Unless Partnership is strictly something you have to apply for. I always thought they offered it to some people. I could, of course, be entirely wrong. Official judgement shall be reserved until I hear a studio recording, however.

Yesterday I forgot to BEDA blog. Sadpandas, no excuses, I just like forgetting things. Yesterday I--("Mom, what did we do yesterday?") Yesterday I went with everyone to get all the cars washed. Nothing special, except I got a road map of Orange County at the car wash. Maybe I won't get lost now. Most likely I still will. It's surprisingly simple to read, which is good-32% larger! Then we ate at The Claim Jumper where the fries are amazing and I SWEAR I saw Lizz's (SquirrelyTONKS) long lost secret sister. Lizz, if you read this and have a sister in California... I totally saw her. Upon returning home I tried to get in touch with Marc to see if he wanted to go swimming. It's getting soo nice out here and i've just been getting that swimming feeling. but alas, he had to meet with someone about something. He's back at college now :( I accidentally took a nap at about 4:30, 5-ish. As a result I was up very late again.

TODAY, I have done nothing. I woke up and have been on the computer since. Maybe I'll update this tonight if anything happens.

BEDA #4

You know, it's really helpful that the day of the month corresponds with the BEDA day number.  Otherwise, I'd get lost and confused. :P  Sarcastically, do you know what else is helpful?  Starting these blogs with no plans or ideas >_< 
Jane Austen Ruined My Life. is the title of the book I am currently reading.  My reading of this book wasn't at all premeditated, but a random snag because I wanted to buy a book that day.  It would be nice if I could say "lolz it's so fitting that I'm reading it because we read P&P in school and it ruined MY life! :D" but alas, I didn't hate it.  Granted, I didn't read it all %100, but what I did read (most of t) was really good.  I like her writing style.  But that brings me to the subject of why Jane Austen Ruined My Life is not a book I'm currently enjoying very much.  The writing style of it's author, Beth Patillo, is very simplistic.  (Not to mention the fact that it has too white, too thick, strangely glossy pages, and large type. But we're not talking about aesthetics here.)  At this point in the book, it's almost worse than Twilight.  I hope it gets better, really, because it's an interesting story about Jane Austen's lost letters.  The story at the moment reminds me of Thirteen Little Blue Envelopes in that it's involving an American girl (young woman) who travels to England and is staying with a guy, and who goes somewhere looking for letters.  But then, I didn't like 13LBE very much...  Hm, we'll see!
